Xylitol Poisoning

Important information about Xylitol, Darien Animal Clinic recently has had multiple incidences with dogs consuming
chewing gum which contains Xylitol, a sugar free substitute used in gums and other foods.

Gums and candies that contain Xylitol are Orbit, Trident, Icebreakers Ice Cubes, Stride, Jello pudding, and Altoid mints.

Xylitol poisoning can occur after even just one piece of gum.  Xylitol causes hypoglycemia (a very rapid drop in blood sugar),
resulting in depression, loss of coordination and seizures.  In addition, this can lead to liver failure depending on the amount consumed.

DAC is strongly recommending that all pet owners be diligent in keeping candy, gum and other foods containing Xylitol out of reach
of pets and/or not having it accessible to them at all.

If consumption occurs, call DAC as soon as possible at 630-655-1888, or for after hours care call Lisle Emergency Clinic 630-960-2900
or Arboretum View Animal Hospital 630-963-0424.
